Step back in time to when giant mammals roamed the plains of eastern Idaho.
A time when small bands of nomadic people hunted large and
dangerous mammals for food, clothing and supplies. Over 12,000 years ago the Columbian & Wooly Mammoths, Giant Ground Sloth, Wooly Rhino, Giant Beaver,
Great Musk Ox and Giant Bison were just some of the mammals that roamed free
throughout what is now modern day Idaho. Experience the magnificence of these mammals as you discover a world long forgotten. Come and explore first hand what life was like for early man and the Columbian Mammoth, who lived side by side, in Idaho during the final stages of the Pleistocene Period.
The Museum of Idaho is proud to bring back Bia-Dekape, our full sized Columbian
Mammoth, who will greet you as you embark on an exciting journey between the
past and the present. Discover intriguing facts about this mysterious beast, such as their ringed tusks which could grow up to 16 feet long. See rare
artifacts representing man's 6,000 year history in Idaho's South Eastern Region.
Moccasins, beads, cutting tools, fire stones, musical instruments and pipes along with the weapons of the period. Ice Age Mammals is an exhibition for
the entire family... do not be afraid!
Watch actual fossils being
prepared for exhibit! Raw fossil material, packed in plaster and foil as
it was removed from the dig site, being uncovered and cleaned, assembled
like jig-saw puzzle pieces, and glued together as you watch.
