Click Picture to Zoom In | Tools of the trade Photographs didn't begin appearing in local newspapers until around 1906, and "live news" photographs were simply not attempted; most early pictures were of a feature variety. Starting with wooden-box flash cameras in the 1860s, photographic tools progressed through large-format photographs on glass plates to large-size film negatives, 2 1/4 and 35mm roll film cameras and finally, digital photography. Today most news pictures that appear in your daily newspaper don't exist on film or even as prints until after the presses roll; however, the news pages themselves are produced first as page-size negatives that are used to expose the printing plates.
