Click Picture to Zoom In | Tools of the trade Type sticks were used to hold individual lead slugs during composition. A Merganthaler rule offers printers' measures in the traditional picas (about 6 to an inch), points (about 12 per pica), and agate (a standardized type size of about 7 points). Forms for printing circles in hot lead days weren't simple: A brass circle with a rule-edge was inset with lead slugs of type, then wedged snugly with metal or wood 'furniture.' The square form contains a block of cast type in a chase, wedged with wooden type furniture and locked. |
